TanTan Things in a wijld interview …

TanTan Things in a wijld interview …

The in Berlin living artist Tanja is born in Sigmaringen. She likes most working in a studio in Berlin Wedding together with almost 80 other artists from all over the world. "The lab has become my second home for me. We work together on projects, exchange ideas, give each other feedback, laugh, celebrate and spend time together", Tanja tells us in an interview. Her style is a combination of graphics and illustration. Minimalist lines are combined with coarse surfaces. The small, geometric patterns add the finishing touch to Tanja's artwork! In the interview she tells us more about herself, what fascinates her and what she dreams of.

wijld:
Are there certain things in the world that fascinate you? And why?
Tanja:
What fascinates me most of all is the interaction of people in general, I think - in both a good and bad sense. I find human structures interesting. To see or experience for yourself how you can learn from each other or inspire each other. In this way such a positive dynamic can develop, which is great and fascinating. But unfortunately there is also of course the complete opposite - if you look at the news, I find it overwhelming and frightening how people can use their power to exploit others.

wijld:
Which book are you reading right now?
Tanja:
I'm currently reading Marie Meimberg's book "Be yourself, you'll pack everything else anyway". Especially in the early days as an independent graphic designer and illustrator, there are many difficult and stressful moments and situations. Here the book is a nice inspiration not to take everything too seriously and to be a bit nicer and not too tough on yourself.

wijld:
What does a normal day look like for you?
Tanja:
After having graduated in February, I've been working as a freelance graphic designer and illustrator for clients mainly in the social, cultural and scientific fields. At the same time I work on my own projects - for example on T-shirt designs for wijld ;) or hand printed and sewn textile accessories in small series. My alarm clock usually rings at 7 or 8 in the morning, depending on how long I worked the night before. Then I eat my muesli, drink my first coffee (very important, in the course of the day many more will follow! :)) and go by bike to the lab. Either I work on projects for clients or I make new designs and patterns for my own projects. At the same time I prepare a screen and in the evening I will hopefully be able to print. I actually prefer to work on my own projects in the evening or at night, because the stress and restlessness of the day is somehow over and you can dedicate yourself completely to your design.

wijld:
What did you originally study?
Tanja:
I studied communication design at the University for designing in Karlsruhe. There, we learnt to look at a picture entirely and did not just learn some mechanisms about how to stimulate consumption most effectively. This was extremely important to me, because the design of information and communication in general (looking at a brand or a project) has a decisive influence on how the content is received by the recipient. After my studies, I decided to work as a freelancer, mainly for clients and projects from the social, cultural or sustainable sector. Especially those who work for the common good or "the good cause" often don't have a huge budget for their projects and campaigns to contract large agencies. And I have the advantage that as a freelancer I can work on many different and exciting projects.

wijld:
What is your biggest dream?
Tanja:
To work as a pattern designer for sustainable textile and clothing labels. And that these kind of  labels are going tob e rather the standard than the exception. I have the hope that at some point there will be no more fast fashion and that neither men nor environment will suffer from the enormous mass production of clothes.
